The Gay Blades (English version)

Oh the magnificent New York, that beautiful place that brings us great stuff like Friends, The Empire State, and of course, Saturday Night Live or bands like MGMT, The Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, This city is the origin of another of my favorite bands: The Gay Blades.

The band starts when they met while volunteering in a traveling sideshow, They both worked as the staff for the event. Afterwards, back in NYC, they formed what we now know as The Gay Blades. besides a names that scares you the first time you listen to it, the band just like The White stripes has only two members, Westfield on the guitars and Mills on the drums. they first started playing together when they got signed by Triple Crown, which helped them release their first full-length Ghosts. in the making they introduced synths, keys, harmony and bass, even when their mantra was 'BUCK FASS', this record comes out to the public on 2008, it includes the singles 'N.H.D.N.' and 'O Shot', this record gave them a lot of time on the aird, whether is Tv or radio, they ended up touring around the world for some time and now, after a live record, they're promoting their second full-length Savages, from which we can already hear a little bit with the song they gave for free called 'Try to understand', same that you can download in exchange for a tweet right here... thegayblades.com/ Down here, you can listen to their single 'O Shot'.

Clark Westfield, The genius behind TGB's guitars, was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions:

How did you come up with the name "The Gay Blades"?
Lou Reed's Vicious helped inspire the band. Lou is the father of NYC rock n' roll...so...we thought it was a nice homage.
How would you describe the sound of TGB?
Trash pop, son!

What's the first song you ever wrote as a band?
The first one that was written that made the first record was Why Can't I Grow A Beard? Puppy and I used to play it in another band we were in, but it was all chaotic and crazy...we decided to record it as it was originally written...acoustically....
Who are your biggest musical influences?
David Bowie. Elvis Costello. Beck.

Are you guys are independent right now?
We are signed to Triple Crown Records in the US and on Something In Construction for Europe. If you know any Mexican labels...tell them I said hello.

Was it hard to accomplish what you have done till this point when you dont have a big record company behind you?
Well...not that our record company is big, but they have helped us a great deal. I don't think we would be where we are today without them. They are our family.

I gotta say I loved the video for the song "N.H.D.N.", how did you come up with the idea for it?
I was on tour in the UK and had a dream that was a VERY stripped down version of the video. I wrote it out and told my friend who writes/produces/directs and we did the video within a few weeks! It was a very cool process making your dreams come to life...
What can we expect from the new record?
Fun songs recorded expertly and with soul. Oh...and love....and Trash Pop.
Tell me a song you wish you'd have written and why...
I wish I wrote Happy Birthday. No song gets more revenue or respect that that song.....Believe it. If you film that song, you have to pay royalties...that's why so many movies sing alternate birthday songs... but there's more than enough cake to go around if you catch my meaning.
What kind of music are you guys into right now?
The good kind.

What's your favorite song to play live?
Probably Mean Muses.

What's your favorite venue?

Bowery Ballroom. NYC.
Do you think we'd get to see you guys come to mexico someday?
I hear Mexico City is one of the BEST places for indie rock these days...I would love to come down.

What would you say to the public to get them to listen to TGB?
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Your opinions will fold in on themselves within 3 years, so even if you don't think you like something, the truth is, you have no idea what you like. But we do. You might as well just admit you like us now....it will save us all a lot of time.

and finally, what's your favorite song from TGB?
Probably a song called Puppy Mills Presents. Its where I see TGB going in the future...its on our new album and its very good.

Via Con Dios...mi amigo...

All that's left to say is that, its amazing how tecnology can bring you closer to all those bands, like this one, they don't think they're better than you and they took the time to listen to those fans spread all over the world like me, they listen to you and take a little chat in a more direct way, I would really like to thank James Dean for taking the time to answer my questions, and apparently, for reading my blog, and of course, for the support they gave to their fans, so, there you have James, and finally, I introduce you The Gay Blade's 'N.H.D.N.' Enjoy it.
